*Advice you need to hear at this time concerning your friendships: * Card: The Empress Rx: Be careful not to smother or be smothered. Sometimes friends and people close to you need time to themselves, and they don’t need you all over them. At the same time, sometimes you don’t need friends to be all over you- make sure to communicate this though, instead of pushing people away.
Page of Quills (swords), Knight of Ink (wands) and the High Priestess
Page of Quills in this deck is taken from Sense and Sensibility and represents wit, charm, chatter, and skillful wordplay.
Knight of Ink in this deck is taken from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and talks about making your own way, going against the grain, and being reckless at times (reversed meaning).
The High Priestess is taken from King Lear and represents calm, inner knowledge and expression of divine feminine understanding.
For me all of these cards have more than one figure, engaged in some kind of action involving communication with each other. There is a sense of movement, of pairings, of testing and asking. In each set of cards, there’s a sort of parry back and forth between two figures- exchange both positive, negative and supportive.
In terms of meaning, there’s a lot of interconnectedness with knowledge and communication- sometimes rash and not well planned, but still. These cards are also court and major arcana cards, or what I think of as ‘people’ cards, because of their figures.
Together, I’d read them all as ‘Be careful who you start shooting your mouth off to, especially if it’s a female in a power position because that’s probably not going to go how you’d like it to.’
What do you think? How would you read these cards?
Use your common sense day: Where do you need to think before acting? Card: The Magician Rx: In everything, especially areas that concern manifesting and power dynamics. How true is what you see around you, and how much are you throwing your weight around to get what you want? Where is this ‘power’ really coming from?
Advice you need to hear at this time concerning your personal happiness. Card: Two of parchment (pentacles) reversed. You’ve overextended yourself and things have fallen into chaos. There is no longer a sense of balance, and you’re spinning out of control. (I mean, I knew that already hahaha).
All Souls Day Spread: A message that your Ancestors would like to give you at this time: Card: Knight of Ink (wands) Rx: Just because others don’t see things the way that you do, doesn’t make them wrong. Reign in your pride and try to show some empathy.
A message your Ancestors have been trying to convey that you have not been receptive to in the past: Card: Six of Quills (swords) rx: You’re stuck in the past, worrying and focusing on how things were and what happened to you. Let this go, move onwards from the obsession. Look back at the good things that could have happened in the past, and take heart in what it has made you into.
How to be more open to messages from your Ancestors in the future: Card: Death Let go of the expectations that you and others have placed on you. Bring forth a new start, new practices, new ways of honouring family and the past.
How to honor and connect more strongly with your Ancestors going forward: Queen of Ink (wands) Rx: Fight for what you believe is right, fight for others who aren’t able to fight for themselves. Don’t ignore your anger, express it in an intelligent way that illuminates the path forward.
The Literary Tarot started as a Kickstarter campaign (as many indie tarot decks do). It promised to blend classic stories with tarot imagery, and it was being run by a nonprofit, so there was a promise to fund educational programs in underserved areas. All sounds good!
The campaign ended up taking 2 or slightly more years to fulfill, and instead of having something that backers were under the impression would be backer-exclusive, you were able to purchase it at a major book retailer here in Canada, and for a brief moment in time, you were able to purchase it for much less than what backers who had waited 2 years and needed to pay shipping costs that seemed inflated, had paid for it. I ended up snagging it this way- it was on super discount at Chapters/Indigo, and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I had also wanted to back initially, but I think I missed the window for pledges.
Now the box for this deck is pretty though slightly oversized. The cards are standard tarot card-sized. The gilding is a little too bright on some cards, or maybe some cards are too dark, so it looks a bit garish. The gilding on the side comes off on your hands when you shuffle, though it doesn’t seem to be a large amount lost.
The cards are overly rigid-too thick- and difficult to shuffle with. The gilding also had some of them stuck together, so I had to be careful not to damage them by prying them apart. The link to stories and the help you can find in the guidebook is lovely, the illustrations are, for the most part, beautiful. I’m curious as to how this deck is going to work for me, so stay tuned for the challenge to see what we get!
Dia de los Muertos- What can you do today to show respect and care for those passed? Card: The Tower. I can accept that everything comes to an end, that ultimate destruction is inevitable and the start of a new beginning, no matter how painful it may be. Deck used: The Literary Tarot.
For this month’s challenge, I’m going to use my copy of the Literary Tarot, and my copy of Arcane Bullshit Oracle Deck.
I bought the Literary tarot a while back, and there was some Kickstarter drama connected to this deck, so you’ll find a lot of mixed reviews online about it. I haven’t really used this deck very much since I purchased it for a number of reasons, so I thought, why not try it for this month?
Arcane Bullshit is something that’s been in my shopping cart for ages, and the creator had a Hallowe’en sale, so I snagged it as quickly as I could. Their website and store are hilariously awesome, their mailing list is one of the best things I’ve joined in a long time, and the ridiculousness of this deck has me dying to give it a try. They’re also a Canadian creator (we love to see it), so that gave me a double push. I’ll give you all a proper review soon!
Have you purchased or used any new or interesting decks lately? Let me know in the comments 🙂
Well! I know I posted late quite a few times but I’m happy I managed to do almost every single day in October! On to November! 😀
This month I’m trying the Tarotholics Challenge, made by Twisttheleaf over on the discord server I rave about so often. You can follow me here, on facebook or on Instagram to see my progress.
The best thing about the Tarotholics’ challenges is that they have little spreads built in- about one a week. This gives you some practice with putting multiple cards together and reading the images that connect together. I don’t always find it easy, but I do find it fun! 🙂
Tonight I honour the witch within, my lineage, my roots, my craft and my kin. Guided by ancestors from beyond the veil, what shall this night of my Sabbath unveil? Card: 5 of pentacles, healing from loss, charity, giving to those who need it more than me, handing out excessive amounts of candy to children.
5 of cups: I don’t think it counts as a candy and it might be a bit controversial but red bean dumplings/rice cakes because the first time I had them, I thought it was chocolate and I was so bitterly disappointed when it wasn’t!
The Empress: candy necklace because it reminds me of dressing up in candies as a kid!
Queen of Swords: Something sharp and sour like Warheads!
8 of cups: Whoppers or black licorice because I don’t like either of them and I leave them for someone else to eat.
Ace of pentacles: Golden chocolate coins because… of course golden chocolate coins!
As the bonfires blaze, fiery and bright what transformation awaits me on Samhain night? Card: Nine of Pentacles: Abundance with growth, gentle and slow but being able to reap what I have sown.
Oh Hunter’s Moon, this witching hour, how do I rise within my power? Card: Nine of Wands Rx: I can’t give up, I have to keep going even when things seem hard. The end of the journey is coming, but I can’t give up yet. I still have more to achieve.
And as the veil keeps growing thing, show me how to prepare for this Samhain. Card: The Empress: Embrace my feminity, be creative, nurture my surroundings and myself (I did this today!)
